Today i would like to write about a magical place in the middle of Anatolia… Cappadocia…
Cappadocia is located in the middle of Anatolia and is famous for its unique nature due to the dance of lava rocks and wind. As a result of erruption of Erciyes, Güllü and Hasan volcanos this land was covered with lavas. This volcanic rocks has been changed by wind and rain for millions of years so this unique place was founded. And this magical land is also important for human civilization. Hitite, Frig, Persian civilizations was hosted by this land. Moreover first Christians who escaped from Roman soldiers lived in this land and they built many underground cities both to live and hide from soldiers.
Whenever you reach Cappadocia it’s amazing nature will take you to a magical world.
Where is Cappadocia?
Cappadocia is located in central Anatolia and it is so close to Nevşehir. The main towns in Cappadocia are Ürgüp, Göreme, Avanos, Uçhisar, Ortahisar… There are many other towns but these are the most popular ones…
How can you go to Cappadocia?
You could go to either Kayseri, Ankara or Nevşehir airport to go to Cappadocia. If you are travelling to Cappadocia from Ankara by car, you can stop by Salt Lake and enjoy walking on salt crystals… But going to Cappadodia from Ankara is quite far when you compare with Kayseri. Ofcourse Nevşehir Kapadokya airport is the closest to this wonderful place.
Where to stay in Cappadocia?
In Cappadocia there are many different kind of hotels. You can either stay in a cheap hotel or you can stay in very luxurious hotel. I would always prefer to stay in cave hotels in Cappadocia. It is another unique experience you could try in Cappadocia. Some of the cave hotels are also luxurious. In your cave you could have all luxury and comfort.
What to do in Cappadocia?
Göreme Openair Museum: Göreme is a town which is close to the province Nevşehir. It is almost 10-15 kms from city center of Nevşehir. In this town there is Göreme Openair Museum where you can find many churches which were buit by early christians who escaped from Roman Soldiers. Some examples of these churches are Elmalı, Tokalı, Çarıklı Churches in Göreme Openair museum, you can also see chimney caves used as houses in those times.
Ürgüp: Ürgüp town is very famous in Cappadocia. There are many cave hotels and good restaurants. I strongly recommend Han Çırağan restaurant in Ürgüp but do not forget to make a reservation before going there. Ürgüp is also famous for hand-made carpets and wine.
Üçgüzeller (Three beauties): These are most probably the most famous chimney rocks in Cappadocia. These rocks are near Ürgüp town and due to their shape they are called chimney rocks with hats. There is parking lot just near them so you can make stop and take pictures and make some little souvenious shopping.
Uçhisar Castle: Uçhisar castle is located in Uçhisar town. It is the highest point of Cappodocia. You can climd to the top of the castle and watch this magnificent view. Moreover you can watch Erciyes Volcano eventhough it is so far from Cappadocia.
Baloon Tour: Baloon tours are very famous in Cappadocia. There are many baloon tour companies in there. Baloons take off at sunrise and the duration of the fly is almost an hour. You can enjoy sun rise and watch the fabulous view of Cappadocia from the sky while sun lights are dancing on volcanic rocks.
Underground cities: Another amazing attraction in Cappadocia is to visit underground cities. These underground cities were built especially early christianity times by christians who escaped from Roman soldiers. Most famous underground city is Derinkuyu underground city. Derinkuyu underground city has7 floors and there is school, graveyard, kitchen, ventilation halls, food stores etc. Thousands of people lived in this underground city in those times.
Avanos: Avanos is in the north part of Cappadocia which is famous for mud pots. For centuries mud pots have been made in Avanos. You can see many guys dealing with this and also you can prepare pots from mud.
Ihlara Valley: The lava from Hasan Volcano, compose this amazing valley. You can walk near a spring, enjoy nature and see many churches in Ihlara Valley.
What to eat in Cappadocia?
In Cappadocia you can taste delicious Turkish cusine. You can enjoy beans and rice which are cooked in Turkish style, sarma (wrapped grape leave with chooped meat or rice) and many other traditional foods. Moreover i strongly recommend you to eat testi kebabı (kebab in pot). The waiter will bri break that pot just in front of your eyes and surve it to your plates so you can enjoy soft meat and vegetabled which have been cooked for hours in that pot in owen.
These are main attractions in Cappadocia, it’s a unique place and you will never forget this amazing experience…
